This article will however give you the basic framework on which incomes from awards of these natures are assessed in the U.S.A. thus helping you make informed financial decisions.

The method for assessing income from prizes and awards won in sweepstakes, lotteries and similar contests is pretty simple.

First of all, the assessment method varies for these two different case scenarios:

Case 1.- You did not apply/enter into the contest but you were chosen for the prize.

Case 2. -You applied/entered the contest and then you were awarded the prize.

In the first case, the prize money need not be added to your taxable income.

In the second case scenario, the following rules need to be applied -

As per publication 525 of the If a person wins a prize in television or radio quiz program, lucky number drawing, beauty contest, giveaways, sweepstakes, competitions or other events, he/she should include it in the gross income for the year. For instance, if a person wins a certain amount of money in say a photography competition, he must add this income on Form 1040, line 21 when calculating his gross income. The rest of the procedure for calculating the gross income remains the same.

Now there might be situations when the prizes are awarded in the form of goods or services ad not as cash. For instance, if an individual wins a free iPad or a free vacation, is it taxable?

As per IRS rules, it is taxable in the hands of the beneficiary and the method of doing this would be to first calculate the fair market value of the good or service that was won in the awards. This fair market value is then to be added to the gross income of the individual as required in the on Form 1040.However please note that if you win a non-cash award in your capacity as an employee, you are not supposed to be adding its fair market value to your gross income. But if you receive a cash award from your employee it has to be added to your gross income while filing your Form 1040.

Another assessment query that is often put up pertains to a situation where the winner of the prize refuses to accept the prize. In that case simply do not include value of the sweepstakes win in your income tax return.
